Locorotondo

Discovering the circular village

This magnificent village, with its characteristic circular plan, dominates the suggestive landscape of the Itria Valley, in the heart of Puglia. Located in the province of Bari, Locorotondo is divided into 138 hamlets. Thanks to its undeniable charm, the town has been listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy and awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club. Walking through the alleys of Locorotondo means completely immersing yourself in the atmosphere of a village suspended in time: ancient churches, arches and artisan workshops tell of vivid traditions and an authentic atmosphere that resists the influences of modernity. The village is renowned for its characteristic houses with pitched roofs, called “cummerse”, covered with limestone slabs called chiancarelle. Its historic center is completely walkable and offers endless emotions.

The picturesque panoramas, flowered balconies and breathtaking views will leave you enchanted, extending the time as if by magic. During a walk in Locorotondo, it is possible to visit several churches, each with its own peculiarity, which testify to the deep devotion and local folklore. Among these, the Church of San Rocco stands out, patron saint of Locorotondo, whose tradition says he freed the population from the plague. Also worth a visit are the Church of Maria Addolorata, the Church of Santa Maria Annunziata and the Basilica Minore dei Santi Cosma e Damiano.

Other religious buildings of notable interest are the Church of the Madonna della Greca, dating back to the 16th century, and the mother church dedicated to San Giorgio, rebuilt on a pre-existing 18th-century structure, enriched with 14th-century bas-reliefs. In the heart of the historic center, the baroque Palazzo Morelli stands out, next to the clock tower, and the Palazzo Comunale, now home to the Civic Library. For a breathtaking panoramic view, we recommend visiting the panoramic terrace that offers a spectacular view of the entire Itria Valley, with the cities of Martina Franca and Alberobello on the horizon.

In the Marziolla district, you will find the oldest trullo in Puglia, dating back to 1509. From its panoramic terrace, you can be enchanted by the spectacular landscape characterized by woods, vineyards, olive groves and trulli scattered in the surrounding districts, together with ancient farms. The village preserves a long winemaking tradition that has led to the production of excellent white wines, such as the famous Bianco Locorotondo DOC: ideal to accompany appetizers and fish dishes. The wines of Locorotondo go perfectly with local culinary specialties, including the famous orecchiette with turnip tops, meat cooked in wood-fired ovens and lamb tripe rolls. All genuine dishes that are worth tasting during your visit to Locorotondo.

A tour of the Itria Valley would not be complete without a visit to Locorotondo, a jewel nestled in the Apulian hills that will give you an unforgettable experience.
